Masse Moro

Is a Norwegian heritage language camp that is held in the town of Beaver Creek Wisconsin which is about 12 minutes away from Eau Claire. The camp is pretty secluded from busy city life around here. We are there for 2 weeks out of the summer and we stay in cabins.

The cabins are divided up into age groups. Each cabin has 2-3 counselors that stay in the cabin and each one is a different name regarding the regions and towns in Norway, Vestlandet, Østlandet, Svalbard, Sjorlandet, Nord Norge, & Asgard.

Everyone wonders what we do there for 2 weeks straight with no American things what’s so ever. Well our day starts off very early at 745 am, from there we are on a schedule until 930 at night. Being on a schedule sounds lame and cheesy, yes but it’s actually not half bad. Though out the day we have activities, games, snack time, language classes and “shopping” time even which really is just where you can by like Norwegian candies or music or anything else of the Norwegian heritage.

Everyone LOVES going to camp because it’s a great way to meet new people and just get away from the TV computer phone and a lot of other American things for a while. I have met so many great friends there in which a good number of them I still see and talk to on a regular basis.  It’s a little hard at first especially if you start out coming at age 9 because your so young, but you learn to adjust and just have fun and go with the flow. Its really one of the best experiences I have ever had over the summer. I learned so much every year I went from speaking Norwegian, creating norsk crafts, learning about the heritage, playing games and eating some of the food.

The camp has some of the basic necessities like a lodge with a modern kitchen & dining hall, comfortable rustic cabins, a shower house with indoor toilets, 3 acre ball field, ropes/confidence course, cross0country par course, 170 acre along the Eau Claire River with nature trails and a nature center and the most amazing part is the start-of-the-art Hobbs Observatory.

Some of the activities that go on at the camp are fun Norwegian Language sessions with dialogues, songs and games, special evening programs, Norwegian holidays celebrated, handicrafts, dancing, soccer, volleyball and other sports activities, Viking club including Viking games, crafts, mythology and more, programs at the Beaver Creek Nature Center, and programs at the UW Observatory.
